Thomas City Council 1977-1979; Kentucky State senate 1979-1983; elected as a Republican to the One Hundredth Congress (November 3, 1998-January 3, 1999); not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives in 1998, but was elected to the United States Senate in 1998 for a term ending January 3, 2005; reelected in 2005.
